Handheld GPS by Memory Map
Hello everybody, it’s Richard Lopez again from SatelliteMapReview.com and today I’d like to have a look at the Memory Map Adventurer series of GPS devices. I’ve already discussed a few outstanding GPS mapping devices such as the Satmap Active 10 Plus and the Garmin Montana series. The reason I like these models is because of the quality of the on-screen mapping options. It used to be that a handheld GPS device would just do the basics, giving you your GPS co-ordinates, your bearing and perhaps a very basic rendering of your environment, but nothing resembling a real map. Now, with the Montana series, Satmap Active 10 and the Memory Map Adventurer series GPS is so much more than just, well, GPS! These GPS devices use Ordnance Survey-powered maps generated on-screen to give you an unprecedented all-round vision and understanding of your physical environment whilst laying all your GPS and positional tools over the top. So, let’s have a look at what Memory Map have to offer with their Adventurer series of GPS.
The Adventurer series from Memory Map consists of two models, both with a distinctive yellow cover. These are the smaller 2800 model, and the slightly larger 3500 model. The difference is in the size and price. The 2800 model is smaller, more rectangular and preferred by some because of its size whereas the 3500 is more like a tablet size and comes with the option of a handy stylus. Both of the devices run off an excellent and high-powered 50 channel Gps Receiver which gives an excellent and quick lock on and stays strong in all conditions.
As I said at the beginning of this piece, what really marks out an excellent handheld GPS device for me is the quality of the mapping. This rings absolutely true with the Memory Map Adventurer series as both the 2800 and 3500 models run off what I call the ‘gold standard’ of mapping, Ordnance Survey. Ordnance Survey gives simply the best mapping around in the UK and beyond with full-colour renderings of all natural features, tracks, roads and contours. The Memory Map Adventurer series allows downloads which give you all of the features of the Ordnance Survey right there on the GPS screen.
Both the 2800 and 3500 operate via a touchscreen interface and the 3500 also comes with a stylus option, handy for those days when you’re perhaps wearing gloves. Both models have high-resolution 96,000 pixel screens with the 2800 screen size of 2.8 inches and the 3500 with a larger 3.5 inch screen. It’s worth noting the 3500 comes with the option of marine charts as well as the normal land-based maps so it could easily be used onboard a boat.
Although your Memory Map Adventurer will usually come with some sort of preloaded maps included (it is worth checking this before purchase) Memory Map themselves have something called the V5 collection which is a range of mapping add-ons. You may select which area of the country you would like to explore and then purchase the relevant to download. PC software is available for both the 2800 and the 3500 models so you can plan routes and analyse data before and after your trip. The 3500 model also has an option which is called the DigitalGPS window where you can plan the lay out of the interface just as you like it on-screen.
The main thing to remember about the Memory Map Adventurer series is that the mapping options and the digital rendering of the features on screen are excellent, one of the most important things for me that a handheld GPS can possess. Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article and got something out of it and please go ahead and visit my dedicated resource website, satellitemapreview.com where you can find out all the latest information on a range of handheld GPS.
